The interesting (and quite disappointing) thing about X8 is that it gets easier as it goes along. Bosses are suitably challenge, and on Hard mode, they become hellish, gaining new super moves, as well as increased damage and speed. Although there are a few instances of unfair difficulty, for the most part, slow and steady will almost always win the race.

Burn Rooster’s stage sees you scaling down walls, narrowly avoiding spike pits, ending with outrunning an inferno, to Optic Sunflower’s stage (yes, these bosses do look as wonderfully ridiculous as they sound), which takes place in a series of combat training simulations. Speaking of stages, each is colourful and unique in design, matching their boss’s quirks perfectly. This makes doing multiple runs of stages an absolute joy.

Rare metals can be found tucked away, which allow you to purchase new chips to upgrade the three maverick hunters. All are well-balanced and equally as fun to romp around stages in- however, if you want to see and do everything, you’ll need to experiment with your choices. Zero’s forte is close-range combat, while Axl’s rapid fire playstyle allows you clean house with ease. X excels in long-range damage, his charged buster shots being able to wipe the floor with masses of enemies. You can choose any two hunters for each mission, switching between them on the fly to make the most of their unique abilities. So, how’s the gameplay? 2.5-D side-scrolling action is the nature of the game. Unlike the ugly as sin character models from X7, everyone here sports a slimmed down, realistic look. Megaman X8 will never be a game you play for deep, thought-provoking dialogue, but the new navigators, enemy analyst Layer and R&D whiz Palette provide some fun interactions for Zero and Axl, respectively. No longer does Axl sound like a whiny brat, nor X a dude who is just reading the script in a monotone. X7’s horrid voice acting of the main cast was as disappointing as it was hilarious, and the recasting here has done wonders. The characters, while in no way nuanced, are great fun to watch interact. It’s serviceable, and I found myself still looking forward to the post-stage cutscenes (well, text-based, talking head cutscenes), despite seeing them so many times before.
To its credit, it does try to pose some interesting philosophical questions about the progression of humanity via questionable means, but these don’t really come into play until the last act. Along the way, they get cosy with the three navigators (kidding, it’s a PG game, after all… but, a Megaman dating sim might be interesting), and find out who the cause of the mess is. The story follows blue boy X, sabre-wielding edgelord, Zero, and gun-toting Axl, as they try to puzzle out why ordinarily harmless civilian robots (known here as Reploids) have gone rogue (or ‘maverick’), leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. There’s no need to play the prior games in the series, as it can be followed easily on its own- not in a ‘simple but effective’ way, but more of a ‘barebones’ way. The plot is easily the weakest aspect of this side-scrolling beam saber/ arm cannon adventure. With great voice acting, a pulse-pounding electro-rock soundtrack, and gameplay that will challenge your reflexes as much as it will your patience, Megaman X8 is a game that still feels as fresh in 2018 as it did in 2005. It was the first game I ever completed on Hard mode, and my god, was that a satisfying feeling. I first experienced Megaman X8 sometime in 2005, and proceeded to complete it six times. What better way to spend my holiday period than busting out a remaster of one of the games that shaped my childhood. Thankfully, having a month and a half of vacation has meant I’ve had plenty of time to get my game on, as they say.
